I have been a general practitioner for over 20 years now, did my training in England (Cambridge) and worked there for a number of years. I have now been back in the Netherlands for some time now and work here in the day practice but also at the out-of-hours. As a general practitioner, in addition to a caring task, I also have an exemplary function. Working in the Rotterdam region I decided to become a Cycling Doctor. This means that I cycle to work (as much as possible), make my visits by bicycle and also take the bicycle if there is an emergency. I am still amazed at how much time I save by taking the bike, not to mention the ever-existing parking problem in the big cities. By cycling to work I often see beautiful sunrises, I hear birds singing, I get exercise and I arrive at work fresh and cheerful. On the way back, cycling allows me to distance myself from my work, without being stuck in (endless) traffic jams. And do I have a wet suit? Oh well, it will dry soon enough.
What do people say about me
There are now many people whom I have been able to guide in joy, but also in sadness during illness and also when saying goodbye and when dying. Here I let patients speak
"I have known doctor Backhuys for a long time. You will find a listening ear with her and she mainly thinks along and in solutions. I always feel at ease with her and no question is too crazy for her. No other doctor for me!"
Fleur
'Emmeline is a great doctor and coach to work with because she combines a warm, investigative interest with thoroughness and broad work and life experience like no other. A true breath of fresh air. In a world full of tricks, egos and uncertainty, it's wonderful to be able to reflect with her on what's bothering you.'

'Emmeline is a committed general practitioner, who does everything in her power to find out the cause of the complaints and wants to build up from the source by gaining insight into the patient's cause of the condition. I never felt like a number with her. She made and took time to have a conversation and to go into depth. Who is the patient behind the condition. The condition is not the most important thing. The person is more important than the disease. The disorder gives direction to what is going on in the person (= patient). Emmeline doesn't immediately make a diagnosis, she looks further.'
